Welcome back after the Easter break we are looking forwards to this, the last term, with the Year 6 children and preparing the Year 5’s for their transition to Year 6. We have lots of exciting things planned for the term ahead.
In literacy we will continue to work on our comprehension skills; answering a range of questions from different genres. The children will develop their grammar and punctuation skills through specific SPaG lessons as well as focuses within our written work. We will be writing newspaper reports, creating narratives, experimenting with poetry and through the rehearsals for the year 5&6 production we will encounter play scripts and drama.
It is important that children read aloud to an adult regularly but also that they discuss their reading. Asking your children to describe a character to you, retell the events of the story or write a review of a book can all deepen their understanding. It is also important for children to develop the ability to scan a text for information at a greater speed and regular reading supports this.
In maths we will encounter: number, calculations, fractions, decimals and percentage, measurement, geometry, statistics, algebra and ratio and proportion. We will also be continuing with weekly mental maths focuses and our half termly Times Table Challenge.
We will initially continue our China focus from the spring term and then move onto mapping settlements looking at types and location of settlements?
In this unit of work, we will be finding out who the Anglo Saxons and Viking were and about the key dates and events in their time period. We will find out about life in Britain during these periods and learn about the discoveries at Sutton Hoo and the Viking raid on Lindisfarne.
This term is about the human body. The children will look into how the body changes over time and what effect this has on our lives. This will lead to discussions about our eyes and major organs in our body. They will look at life cycles of both plants and animals (including humans) and this topic will link closely with PSHCE and RSE.
The children will have cricket coaching on a Monday and Mr Marshal will continue to work with the children on a Friday afternoon. We will shortly begin to practice our May Day dances and are looking forward to another amazing celebration on Hall Hill. Please ensure your child’s PE kit is at school everyday.
In RE we will continue with the creation story, looking at different perspectives and interpretations. The children will discuss and answer theological questions allowing them to have a deeper understanding of what religion means to those of faith.
This term we will cover relationships and changes ready for transition. We will continue our work on British Values and understanding how we can make ourselves safe online as well as thinking about peer on peer abuse. We will identify and challenge stereotyped attitudes and discrimination. Through our ‘my money’ focus the children will gain an understanding about deductions from earnings and consider degrees of risk and the possible consequences of taking financial borrowing
We will use clay and inscribe runes to present our own name and use the work of Charles Thomas "Chuck" to inspire a whole class project.
The children will be using and showing an understanding of spreadsheets. They will be able to put in data, organise it, create graphs from it and input code to help work out calculations.
Year 6 SATs
The Year 6 SATs tests will take place during the week beginning Monday 14th May. There will be a separate letter explaining the arrangements for that week but the Year 6’s will have a range of sporting activities each morning before school and we will provide breakfast for the children at the beginning of each day.
Learning Logs – These activities will be set on a Thursday. The children will have a period of 12 days, which will include two weekends, to complete this activity.
Set on a Thursday and due back on a Wednesday.
Spellings and Maths focuses will be set weekly and tested on a Thursday.
