Oak Class Curriculum News
Welcome back to the new school year. We are looking forward to a great time together. Please find some useful information about the autumn term in Oak Class (Year 5&6).
Mrs Bull will be teaching the children on Monday and Tuesday and Miss Kirby Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Hill will continue to be our fantastic teaching assistant throughout the week.
Homework will be handed out on a Friday and should be handed in the following Tuesday. If it is completed early children are more than welcome to bring it in. Maths will be set weekly as will spellings and a maths ‘quick recall’ task. The children will be set Learning Log activities which they will have 12 days to complete. Please encourage your child to read for at least 10 minutes every day. By year 5 and 6 we are trying to encourage independence in reading and a love of books. Many of the children are now at a standard where they have the ability and the skills to read independently. Any children we feel still need additional support will receive this within school. The children will all be taught reading strategies during comprehension sessions. Encouraging reading as a leisure activity can be one of the best ways to improve your child’s performance in English. Remember children should be encouraged to read for enjoyment and comics and magazines are sometimes useful to encourage more reluctant readers. Even the most able reader will often appreciate books, which have some illustration.
We are very much looking forward to our visit to Norfolk Lakes after half term. We will be holding a short meeting after school at 3:30pm on Thursday 12th October to run through the arrangements and to answer any questions you may have.
We will be using the William Shakespeare play Macbeth as our stimulus for some of our writing. After initially listening to the plot the children will engage in drama activities and think about characters feelings. They will look at the play script format and then use extracts from the story of Macbeth to write narrative pieces. We will then move onto character descriptions and descriptive writing about settings. During the second half of the term we will look at the life of Shakespeare and write a bibliography. We will also be thinking about debates and persuasive arguments.
We will be also writing newspaper reports, taking on the role of the journalist and practicing our interview techniques. This work will be based around the picture story ‘Tuesday’ by David Wiesner.
Grammar and punctuation work will be taught within specific lessons as well as being incorporated within focused writing tasks. Comprehension work will be completed in groups allowing the children to challenge their understanding about the content of a range of genres.
Our maths lessons will cover a wide range of areas and the children will have the chance to rehearse, reason and problem solve using the four calculation processes, fractions, measures, data, number, place value, probability, shape and measure.
We will be looking at Beliefs and Actions in the World: Can Christian Aid and Islamic Relief change the world? This unit will focus on the work of two charities. It enables pupils to explain beliefs and their impact, and to compare and contrast aspects of religion in action. They will develop their understanding of community and to relate what they learn to their own questions of value and commitment.
Our topic will be ‘Living things and their habitats’. This will include classifying animals, plants and microorganisms. We will discuss how these have adapted for their environment and investigate how microorganisms influence our world both negatively and positively and also how they spread.
We will be covering a range of focuses in our geography lesson: longitude, latitude and the way the globe is divided; times zones across the world; Arctic and Antarctic regions; climate zones across the world and the effect of these on vegetation.
P.E will be on a Monday and Tuesday but we ask that the P.E kit is kept in school at all times and that it is clearly labelled with your child’s name just in case there are any last minute timetable alterations. Please also ensure that indoor and outdoor kit is in school as cold weather will not stop us! We begin with ball games and balance.
Could your child please bring in a named old shirt/ top to wear when completing art activities in school so to protect your school clothes during ‘messy activities’. Thank you
We will be studying the work of two very different artists:
1. Stephen Wiltshire, a young black artist who didn't speak until he was 9 and communicated through his amazing drawings, He is now an established and successful artist of cityscapes and his work is displayed all around the world.
2. Ken Done, an Australian artist best known for his design work. He creates simple, brightly coloured images.
Initially we will be working together to create our Class Charter and will move on to looking at the British Values of; democracy, the rule of laws, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different deaths and beliefs. We will also look at New Beginnings - which offers children the opportunity to see themselves as valued individuals within a community and to contribute to shaping a welcoming, safe and fair learning community for all. Throughout the theme children explore feelings of happiness and excitement, sadness, anxiety and fearfulness, while learning shared models for ‘calming down’ and ‘problem solving’.
This term we will focus on programming, understanding conditionals and variables. We will design and debug specific programmes; solving problems by decomposing them into smaller parts. Alongside this we will always be reflecting on e-safety; how this impacts our lives and ways to keep safe.
We will be spending time preparing for Young Voices which we are looking forward to performing in January.
