RECEPTION AND KEY STAGE 1
This term our creative unit will be ‘Home and Away’, with the focus on London and Sydney, Australia. We will be learning about the main sights of London, and some of the history and geography of the area. We will also be ‘travelling’ to Australia, learning more about life on the other side of the world.
We plan to start our unit of work with a WOW start, to give children a flavour of both aspects of the unit. We are asking that children come into school on Monday 16th April dressed in red, white and blue to represent our ‘Home’, or green and yellow to represent Australia. We will work in expert groups to find out more about different aspects of England and Australia, and we will share our findings at the end of the day.
We will be doing lots of fun, interesting and creative work during this unit. History and Geography will be a strong focus of our work, as we learn more about our own country and the wider world. We will also be writing in a range of forms, including stories, guidebooks, posters and maps. We will be drawing and painting in a range of styles and we are looking forward to creating flags, royal portraits, collage pictures and Aboriginal paintings. We look forward to sharing the work with you as it progresses.
Our children will be authors and illustrators this term, and they will be writing their first story book, based on ‘The Queen’s Hat’. The creation of the book will also involve a range of other skills, and we will look forward to sharing our books with you when they are completed.
We are planning to visit Hamerton Zoo, with a particular focus on animals from more distant lands, especially Australia. We will be learning about the animals during a session with the zookeepers as well as having the chanced to look round ourselves. As well as this, we will be learning about British wildlife, by studying creatures in our local environment. We will be using our Bug Garden as well as visiting the Country Park, so hopefully the weather will be kind to us.
We will continue to work hard to improve our skills in Maths and phonics. Our children are making good progress with the Read Write Inc phonics scheme, and everyone will be encouraged to use their phonics in longer pieces of writing. Thank you for all your support at home with phonics, reading and the maths games.
We will up-date you regularly on our work through Tapestry and through our weekly news which always lets you know about our class activities and achievements. Our Home-School books provide extra information about our class and individuals, so please remember to check in these each day.
Thank you once again for all your support with everything we do at school.
