MATHS AT BRIGSTOCK SCHOOL
Forward thinking and creative, valuing faith, tradition, community and achievement.
We aim to be a nurturing, creative school at the heart of our community, where all are enabled to achieve their best. We celebrate our differences, we value each individual and we encourage kindness and respect from all.
Our Christian values underpin all our learning, and the depth and breadth of our curriculum enriches our children and enables them to embrace ‘Life in all its Fullness’. (John 10:10)
Our Maths curriculum ensures that the National Curriculum requirements are met through a broad and rich learning experience. Maths teaching and learning provides children with the opportunity to become number fluent and increase their problem solving and reasoning ability. Children experience learning in a variety of ways, using different resources and approaches including concrete, pictorial and abstract methods. Our vision is to equip our pupils with key skills, knowledge and vocabulary that will enable them to be successful at all elements of the maths curriculum. This is embedded this through a challenging curriculum delivered through high quality teaching and learning opportunities.
Our children will understand the importance of mathematics, and are encouraged to be confident in numeracy and to apply the skills that they learn. We will build on skills and understanding in a step by step and progressive way. Maths is delivered in a way that enables pupils to continue to practice key skills and apply them in a variety of contexts. We will provide cross curricular opportunities to develop pupils’ mathematical fluency.
The Maths curriculum is delivered through a range of supporting documents including White Rose Hub, Classroom Secrets and Target my Maths. All off these allowing the teachers to plan an appropriate curriculum that challenges and supports the children’s learning.
High quality teaching and learning provides children with the opportunity to become number fluent and increase their problem solving and reasoning ability. In children’s learning books, you will see a variety of fluency and problem solving activities, providing children with an opportunity to apply previously taught skills in order to embed and excel in the subject.
The impact of our Maths offer is measured through our monitoring cycle. This includes book looks, learning walks and pupil voice. Once reviewed, achievements are shared with the staff and areas for development across the school are discussed, action and re-monitored.
