Forward thinking and creative, valuing faith, tradition, community and achievement.

We aim to be a nurturing, creative school at the heart of our community, where all are enabled to achieve their best. We celebrate our differences, we value each individual and we encourage kindness and respect from all.

Our Christian values underpin all our learning, and the depth and breadth of our curriculum enriches our children and enables them to embrace ‘Life in all its Fullness’. (John 10:10)

It is our intention that our History curriculum offer is bespoke for our school. To provide the bridge between our school vision, ‘life in all its fullness’, our values ‘respect, responsibility, resilience, reflectiveness, readiness, resourcefulness, kindness and well-being’ and the National Curriculum. Our vision is to equip our pupils with key skills, knowledge and vocabulary so that they can explore life in all its fullness. Once suitably equipped we aim to embed this through a challenging curriculum delivered through high quality teaching and learning opportunities. Furthermore, it is our intent to provide our pupils with a rich and broad cultural capital through purposeful enrichment opportunities to achieve excellence for all.

Sequences of lessons are planned using progression mapping within and across key stage phases. Carefully considered key questions inspire active learning and challenge for all. Key skills and knowledge are revisited and built upon within each year and across key stage phases. Progression is carefully mapped out across year groups from EYFS through to year 6. Opportunities for cross-curricular learning are identified in our medium term plans, for example writing, reading, maths and RE.

At Brigstock Lathams School, teaching staff are provided with the resources and CPD they need to equip children with key skills and ‘sticky knowledge’ and to embed these.  Curriculum mapping can be found in the subject leader file and on our website. Through our History curriculum, it is our intent that our children develop:

  • an excellent knowledge and understanding of people, events, and contexts from a range of historical periods and of historical concepts and processes.
  • the ability to think critically about history and communicate ideas very confidently in styles appropriate to a range of audiences.
  • the ability to consistently support, evaluate and challenge their own and others’ views using detailed, appropriate and accurate historical evidence derived from a range of sources.
  • the ability to think, reflect, debate, discuss and evaluate the past, formulating and refining questions and lines of enquiry.
  • a passion for history and an enthusiastic engagement in learning, which develops their sense of curiosity about the past and their understanding of how and why people interpret the past in different ways.
  • a respect for historical evidence and the ability to make robust and critical use of it to support their explanations and judgments.
  • a desire to embrace challenging activities, including opportunities to undertake high-quality research across a range of history topics.
