Forward thinking and creative, valuing faith, tradition, community and achievement.

We aim to be a nurturing, creative school at the heart of our community, where all are enabled to achieve their best. We celebrate our differences, we value each individual and we encourage kindness and respect from all.

Our Christian values underpin all our learning, and the depth and breadth of our curriculum enriches our children and enables them to embrace ‘Life in all its Fullness’. (John 10:10)

Our Geography curriculum is bespoke to our school, and has been designed to enable our children to experience ‘Life in all its Fullness’. By providing our children with a broad and challenging range of Geographical learning experiences we intend to increase their cultural capital and broaden their life experiences through research, field trips, visitors, cultural links and creative activity.

Our Geography curriculum at Brigstock School has been specifically designed to enable our children to investigate places, patterns and to communicate geographically.

We aim for our children to gain an excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like as well as gain an excellent understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected and how much human and physical environments are interrelated.

Our work in school will ensure that our children have:

  • An extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary.
  • Fluency in complex, geographical enquiry and the ability to apply questioning skills and use effective analytical and presentational techniques.
  • The ability to reach clear conclusions and develop a reasoned argument to explain findings.
  • Significant levels of originality, imagination or creativity as shown in interpretations and representations of the subject matter.
  • Highly developed and frequently utilised fieldwork and other geographical skills and techniques.
  • A passion for and commitment to the subject, and a real sense of curiosity to find out about the world and the people who live there.
  • The ability to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current and contemporary issues in society and the environment.

We aim to ensure that our Geography curriculum is relevant to our children, both in terms of the local area in which we live and the wider world and current issues within it. We utilise field work experiences to provide learners with practical opportunities to use their geographical skills to navigate, explore and create. We aim to provide an inclusive curriculum with experiences that inspire and engage all pupils including disadvantaged and SEND pupils.

We regularly evaluate our curriculum to ensure that it is relevant, meaningful and interesting for our children. Our curriculum is mapped to ensure sequential learning from EYFS to Year 6, and the units of study ensure that all year groups are taught appropriate and challenging content, building on previous knowledge and experiences. Wherever possible, we link to other areas of the curriculum to deepen and broaden our curriculum, enriching their learning experiences and developing cultural capital.

We develop an understanding of diversity in our learners through links to our overseas school and through exploring the diversity of our local area. We involve our wider school community including parents and carers to share their cultural background and experiences. We promote the Fundamental British Values as well as the school values of kindness through these experiences.
