EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE
First of all, we would like to welcome everyone to our school. We are looking forward to working with you, and developing strong links with you all as your children begin their learning journey at Brigstock School.
We would like to remind everyone that we do three weeks of part-time schooling. We start the day at 9 o’clock. You can bring your child to the gate by our outdoor area for the first week. From the second week, we line up on the main playground. Our morning finishes at 12 o’clock for the first two weeks. After that, we have one week of staying for lunch with a pick-up time of 1.30pm. The children are always collected from the gate by our outdoor area. Full-time schooling will begin on September 25th, 9.00-3.30pm.
We plan an exciting, creative curriculum for the children. Our Early Years Curriculum has three areas that underpin all our learning- Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. We encourage all the children to become active, independent learners, and aim for them to be engaged, motivated and creative in all the activities that we provide.
This term we are looking forward to lots of exciting and creative learning in our classroom. Our first theme is ‘Our Favourite Things’ and our work and displays will be linked to favourite colours, seasons, toys and friends. We will be reading lots of books, with a particular focus on the ‘Blue Kangaroo’ stories, ‘Elmer’ stories and stories by Oliver Jeffers. We will also use ‘Room on the Broom’ to link with work on friendship. Throughout our first unit, we will keep you up-to-date on the activities in our classroom. We will all be enjoying a favourite colour day during our week on favourite colours, and ‘Toy Day’ during our week on favourite toys.
After half-term, our unit of work will be ‘Houses and Homes’. We will learn about our own homes, and the houses and homes around us. We will also read a range of traditional stories featuring the houses and homes of fictional characters. We will enjoy learning about animal homes of a range of creatures, taking the lead from the children where possible.
Our work in Science will focus on ourselves and materials, with ongoing work on the seasons of the year, weather and habitats. We will all enjoy using the bug garden and our wonderful grounds, especially in our outdoor sessions on Fridays.
Of course there will be plenty of artwork! As well as our creative activities linked to each unit we will also be learning about the styles and work of the artist Mackenzie Thorpe, and we are looking forward to creating pictures in his style. We will also be creating lots of mixed media artwork linked to the work of the artist Paul Horton, who specialises in creating interesting and colourful pictures of houses.
In Reception, we ask that you read with your child as much as possible, and record in the Home-School book. We send home books as soon as your child is settled, and we hear them read at least twice a week at school. We also aim to increase your child’s sight vocabulary with ‘word pots’. Each Monday we send home three words for your child to learn, with the aim being that they recognise the words quickly ‘on sight’. If the words have been learnt, we add three more. Please ensure that your child’s word pot is in their bag on Monday, as this is the only day of the week that we check the pots.
We do a phonics session every morning, and we send home a worksheet that links to each new sound that is learnt. We ask that you complete this with your child, and encourage correct letter formation from the outset.
We do a range of Maths activities every week, and we ask that you practise counting and writing numbers as much as possible. We do lots of practical problem-solving, and it always helps if the children can use extra opportunities at home to add, subtract, count on and back in practical, relevant ways. We sometimes send home specific Maths tasks for the children to do at home, and we send home Maths games for you to play with your child towards the end of the first half-term.
We will always keep you informed of any extra ways that you can help your child at home throughout our units of work. Please write comments about anything that you have done at home in the home-school book, and don’t forget to record their home-achievements on the leaves!
SOME PRACTICAL ITEMS…
- Mrs Keeley will be in the classroom on Mondays- Wednesdays, and will overlap with Mrs Ettridge on Wednesday afternoons. Mrs Ettridge will teach the class on Thursdays and Fridays. Mrs Clark works with the children all week.
- PE will be on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please can you ensure that your child’s PE kit is in school all week, and includes plimsolls, a white t-shirt, shorts and, if possible, joggers and a sweatshirt as the weather gets colder.
- We have lots of OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES planned this term for the children in Reception. This academic year, our outdoor morning will be on FRIDAYS. Please ensure that your child comes to school in appropriate outdoor clothing and suitable footwear (preferably trainers) every Friday. We also ask that your child keeps a pair of wellies in school.
- Please make sure that all items are named.
- Children can bring in items of specific interest to share with the class, especially if they link to the unit of work. We have a specific ‘show and tell’ time on Mondays and Fridays, where items can be shared with the class.

DAY 10- BRIGSTOCK SCHOOL VALUES
As a school we value our Day 10 curriculum and we hope that our new DAY 10 project will provide all the children in our school with the opportunity to further develop their skills in a range of the arts, as well as confirm the importance of our school values.
Every second Wednesday afternoon, the children will work in mixed-age groups of approximately 15 children on a range of arts-based activities. They will work indoors and outdoors and as groups and individuals. The theme for this term’s activities is SCHOOL VALUES, and all the activities have been planned so that the children can work together on a range of activities that will encourage them to see the importance of our school values in their everyday lives. We will be creating some artistic masterpieces (of course!) and we will also be learning about the importance of team-work, kindness and being open to try and develop a range of new skills. Our focus on kindness will culminate in a Kindness Tea Party on December 6th, for our school and village community. We also plan to open our school advent window on this evening.
We will share more information with you as the term progresses, and we hope that everyone will support the children in their ventures.
